Viagra can cause erections to last for more than a few hours and may not work for everyone. A prescription is required for this drug.
“The FDA’s announcement is an important step in warning people against using any new drugs,” Dr. Nabil Malik, the FDA’s medical director, said in the letter.

“In order for a drug to be safe and effective, it must be safe and effective,” the FDA said in a statement.
“We do not take responsibility for the adverse effects that may occur when a drug is taken without medical supervision,” the FDA said in the letter.
The drug was first approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension in 1998, and is approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. The FDA also issued a warning letter on June 29, 2012.
The drug is also being tested to see if it is safe and effective for treating other health problems.
The FDA said it is working with the National Institutes of Health and the National Library of Medicine to support the science.
